The new era of computers has changed the way people communicate versus decades ago. The digital age has shifted from a traditional industry to an economy that is based on computerized information. These websites will allow a person to join their network for free to begin looking for the love of his or her life. People have a natural instinct for companionship, and the Internet has made the process of falling in love quicker than it used to be centuries ago. Research has shown that online dating is becoming more accepted over time and that attitudes towards it have become more positive (Smith & Duggan, 2013). It is also argued that the convenience and accessibility of Internet dating will stimulate increased usage and will help develop Internet dating into a social norm (Brooks, 2011).

Social media sites have revolutionized the way people communicate and socialize on the Web. Social media is a website or an application that enables a user to share, create or participate in social networking content. Facebook and Twitter are the two most popular, social media websites of this new era. Facebook allows registered users to create profiles, upload pictures, share pictures, and upload videos. Accepting a friend request is the first step to initiating a friendship with another Facebook user. Once the friend request is accepted, socializing can begin between the two users. According to Abutaleb (2015) Facebook had 1.55 billion monthly active users as of Sept. 30, up 14 percent from a year earlier. Of these, 1.39 billion used the service on mobile devices. Facebook has affected the activity and social life of people in various ways. Facebook allows people using computers or mobile phones to share photos, stay in touch with friends, relatives and other acquaintances wherever they are in the world, as long as there is access to the Internet. It has reunified lost family members and friends. Similar to Facebook, registered Twitter users can post and read tweets. Twitter is a good way to keep in touch with friends and promote student interaction. According to Hanna (2011), Companies and organizations are looking to online social marketing programs and campaigns in an effort to reach consumers. However, the challenge facing many companies is that although they recognize the need to be active in social media, they do not truly understand how to do it effectively, what performance indicators they should be measuring, and how they should measure them. Further, as companies develop social media strategies, platforms such as YouTube, Facebook, and Twitter are too often treated as stand-alone elements rather than part of an integrated system.

Video Conferencing is not excluded from the new era of computers. The invention of the webcam has allowed people to communicate in ways that were not imaginable centuries ago. People no longer have to travel an extreme distance to have a meeting or discussion. Video conferencing have also become an alternative way for teachers and their students to communicate, contrary to the traditional way when face to face in the classroom was mandatory, this provides students and teachers with the opportunity to learn and teach by participating in two-way communication forums. Furthermore, teachers and lecturers worldwide can be brought to secluded or otherwise isolated educational facilities. Students from diverse backgrounds can learn about each other. Sometimes it is simply not possible to have direct meetings with two or more people. However, video conferencing adds another possible alternative, and can be considered when a live conversation is needed; the parties of the conversation can’t physically come to the same location; or the expense or time of travel is a consideration. For example, Facetime is a program on the iPhone that will allow iPhone carriers to communicate using video conferencing. According to Abdelkader (2014), it is a powerful alternative that educators can use to deliver instruction across distances. It can reduce barriers such as travel safety, costs, and time that can impede trips designed for intellectual exchanges as it offers a viable means to develop a platform for addressing social and work place changing.

In conclusion, computers are here to stay, and we can expect more inventions of new technology in the future. Apple Inc., Microsoft, and Dell are all major developers, designers, and sellers of computer electronics, computer software, and online services. Apple Inc. introduced the new all-in-one desktop that has all of its components, except the keyboard, built into the monitor. Contrary to Apple Inc., Dell is the developer of computers and software and not cell phones. On the other hand, Microsoft is best known for its software products. Some of the operating systems that are developed by Microsoft includes, but is not limited to, Windows XP; Windows 8; Windows 10; and Microsoft Office. In fact, Microsoft introduced a new browser in the year 2015 called Microsoft Edge that has an intelligent personal assistant named Cortana.

These companies are major contributors to the new computer era. Our society has grown to a culture that is connected through the Internet. Remote access will allow a person to control all Wi-Fi enable devices from his or her smart phone, Apple pay has capabilities to make purchases at a store using an iPhone or an Apple watch, and a car can be started and unlocked through a program called Onstar. These are all examples of the new revolution of technology. Things like electric cars, smart televisions, and other computerized machines have proven that computers are intelligent, and the world has become dependent upon them. Computers are an effective way to communicate and this can have a positive result on a person’s expectations and opportunities.

Internet of Things: More Than Just Protected Plumbing

The man looking over the water gauges couldn’t believe what he was seeing…

Just down the road, a few miles from his little control room, the giant tank holding Robinson Township’s municipal water supply was draining down… fast.

He looked at the clock. Midnight. The thermometer registered an icy 20 degrees. Somewhere out there, among the Pittsburgh suburbs’ 15 square miles of snow-covered neighborhoods and businesses, a water main was losing more than 3,000 gallons of water a minute.

He checked his dials again and did some quick calculations. The township’s storage tank held 1 million gallons of water. At this rate, all of it would be gone before dawn.

But exactly where was the water leaking? Where was the pipe break?

He had no idea.

The answer came five hours later.

A ruptured water main in the town’s commercial district drained off the majority of the township’s supply and left six inches of standing water on the floor of a neighboring Toys “R” Us (not to mention – with little available water for the day, it forced schools to close).

You read about this stuff all the time. For cities around the country, water main breaks are a fact of life.

Or are they?

This is where one of the investing mega trends – the Internet of Things (IoT) – has a rising impact.

IoT to the Rescue

What if you could place sensors in underground water mains, fire hydrants and elsewhere within a piping system, each transmitting bits of data to the town water department?

Put dozens or hundreds of those sensors together, spitting out minute-to-minute information on flow rates and water pressure, and the location of a million-gallon water main break in the middle of the night is no longer such a mystery.

Most breaks, however, aren’t so dramatic or obvious.

Think of a pinhole leak in an underground water main. It might seep a comparatively small amount of water – dozens or a few hundreds of gallons a day. But add up all those leaks in a network of pipes hundreds of miles long, and you’re talking about a lot of wasted H2O.

For instance, Philadelphia’s water department pumps 250 million gallons of water through its municipal system each day. Experts say about a quarter of the water never actually reaches the businesses and residences on the other end of its pipes. That’s 60 million gallons of water lost today. And tomorrow. And the day after that.

Until recently, good luck trying to find even a small portion of those leaks. It’s like trying to find a needle in a stack of needles.

You can imagine how precious water is in a place such as Las Vegas. Well, the region’s water district recently installed Internet-connected sensors to the buried water mains running right down the center of the Las Vegas Strip.

The devices monitor the physical integrity of the pipe walls on a real-time basis. Such efforts have helped the water district identify more than 1,600 leaks in its system and saved nearly 300 million gallons of water.

That’s just one water system. Keep in mind, the United States has more than 150,000 city, county and regional water authorities. That’s a lot of water saved (and a lot of money too).

The Internet of Things is about more than just detecting leaks in water mains, of course. But it demonstrates in just one way the growing use of the IoT and why it’s such an investable mega trend.

Computers Through The Ages

Steve Jobs and Bill Gates are both names that are synonymous with computers. Well, at least they are with modern computers but they were just building on an idea that came along in the 1800’s and continued to grow throughout time. What used to be huge machines that took up all sorts of room and did only rudimentary (to our standards) work, we now hold in our hands and of course technology is only advancing further all the time.

So, we go back in time, to an Englishman named Charles Babbage who, most say was born just too early for his ideas. He originated the concept of a programmable computer and because of this is known as the father of the technology. He invented the first mechanical computer back in 1833 which was an analytical engine. The input of data and programs was to be provided to the machine through punched cards. The output had a printer, a curve plotter and a bell and it could punch numbers on cards that could be read at a later date. His idea even had an arithmetic logic unit, control flow and integrated memory, which would have been, had it been made, the first ever design for general use.

All of the parts for Babbage’s machine had to be made by hand and unfortunately his idea never reached fruition as the government cut his grants and he ran out of money. His son, Henry Babbage did make a simplified version of his dad’s idea though, in 1888 and he successfully demonstrated that it worked in 1906.

All of these ideas made way for the analog computers which used direct mechanical or electrical models of a problem as the basis for the computation. But, they were not programmable, they weren’t accurate and they weren’t very versatile. Something had to change.

The first programmable electronic computer was ENIAC which was fast and flexible and was completed in 1946. The program was designed by the states of its patch cables and switches. Someone would write a program and then mechanically set it into the machine with a manual reset of the patch cables and wires. It was a far cry from what we have today in the way of computers as it took up 1,800 square feet and weighed a hefty 50 tons. Imagine hauling that around in your pocket!
